Recorded in England with Mercury nominated producer Sean Lakeman

Shakespeare Avenue is a contemporary take on Thompson’s rich and distinctive folk and acoustic roots.

His narrative, character-based, emotive songs have earned him comparisons to Springsteen and Mellancamp. Shakespeare Avenue continues in this vein of songwriting, interweaving political and social commentary with personal, human tales.

Thompson explains, “Some of the characters are real (there’s a song about Dylan Voller, as well as a historical narrative about West Australian Indigenous leader, Yagan), while some are fictional” (‘Avondale Heights To Sunshine’ deals with a suburban dad trying to leave the neighbourhood and it’s traps that he was born into). Holding up a mirror to the human condition, Thompson’s lyrics attempt to make sense of the world, whether it be the personal, societal or political.
“Shakespeare Avenue at its core, is an album about what it is to be human – to love, to be loved and to aspire to be something. I find folk music to be the perfect genre within which to write about these things”.

Taking lead from the British-folk-edge of Richard Thompson, Christy More and Dick Gaughin, Thompson moved his whole family to Dartmoor in the South-West of England, to immerse himself in folk traditions, and find, write and record with this new English influence.

Seeking a new approach to writing and production, Thompson collaborated on his new offering with producer Sean Lakeman, his brother Seth Lakeman (who has spent the last two years touring the world with Robert Plant), and Sean’s partner Kathryn Roberts – the three often referred to as “a virtual folk dynasty”.

Thompson proudly boasts of Shakespeare Avenue as his best work yet.
